The C71 forms an inland loop between Ballygally and Glenarm on the Antrim coast. The road starts on the A2 in Ballygally and heads west towards Carncastle. Just after passing the C72, the road meets the B148 and continues west from a junction to the north. As the road climbs up into the hills, a spur heads south for three kilometres and meets the B148 on a bend south of Carncastle. Continuing west, the road continues to climb into quite rugged upland terrain as it turns north around Scawt Hill and Black Hill which lie to the east of the road's junction with the C70. The road eventually TOTSOs left and descends down into Glenarm village where it once again meets the A2 on the coast.
