The C73 follows the former line of the A926 down the narrow, windy Castle Street in Forfar town centre. It starts on the B9128 just short of its junction with the A926, and heads south, splitting either side of the grand town hall as it reaches the High Street.
Formerly the B9145 (Forfar), it is named after the former castle that stood on a rise to the east of the street towards the northern end. The street is now one-way southbound between Canmore Street and Myre Road.
