The C78 is a short route which runs mostly to the east of the Garnock Water, south of Kilbirnie town centre. It starts at the roundabout over the river on the A760, and winds southwards along Garnock Street, Mill Road and Knoxville Road. It then turns right onto Paddockhol Road, which crosses the river, becoming Holmhead before it reaches the B780.
