The C86 starts on the A68 at Birkenside and initially follows part of an old loop of the main road, before doubling back to re-cross the Legerwood Burn. It then turns right and heads east through the small village of Legerwood, and continuing to the A6089. After a short multiplex to the north, the C86 resumes, heading north east before turning north at Bassendean. After crossing the A697 at Houndslow, the last section of the route continues north to reach the B6456 at Westruther.
