The C91 starts on the A713, opposite its junction with the B741 at the north end of Dalmellington, and heads east along Gateside Road. It then turns left and climbs up past Burnton to the end of the road on the slopes of Craigmark Hill. The road formerly served the colliery areas on the hillside, but has been replaced by a new purpose built road which bypasses the residential areas. The two routes do not connect directly.
