The C97 starts at the Luton Road at a traffic light junction with the A2 underneath the Luton Arches railway viaduct. The congested road heads south east through a mixture of terraced houses and takeaways. Many sides roads here are blocked off, due the steep gradients either side. The road does a small dogleg as Luton High Street, past the old tram depot and a local takeaway fantastically named "The Codfather". At a min-roundabout with Street End Road, the C97 becomes the Capstone Road and heads towards a roundabout with the B2156 North Dane Way.
The road continues past Luton Recreational Ground where it meets the C379 and heads south. This section is claimed to also be part of the C98, but how it connects with the rest, a few miles away, is not known. After another roundabout, this time with Pear Tree Lane, Capstone Road becomes narrow and rural. Passing Capstone Farm Country Park, a youth hostel and a dry slope ski centre, the C97 continues in countryside. Capstone Road runs close to Hempstead's housing estates, but does not connect with any of them. Eventually, the C97 passes the small shopping area of Elm Court and terminates, with the C381 Hempstead Road, on the authority border.
