The C98 starts at a traffic light junction with the A2, next to a Beefeater/Premier Inn combination, that was once a Gas Showroom. Heading south through Rainham, Maidstone Road (one of three in Medway), passes through a mix of interwar and post war housing. The road passes over a double mini-roundabout with Durham Road and Kenilworth Drive, before another min-roundabout, this time with Deanwood Drive. The main thoroughfare into the area of Rainham called Parkwood, this junction and the one following can be busy. The following junction, by a Harvester, is also a mini-roundabout, with Woodside, which provides a useful cut through to the A278 and thus the M2. Maidstone Road continues south with the same style of housing as it has done so far, before finally performing a dog-leg through two mini-roundabouts, the first with Deanwood Drive again, and the second with Wigmore Road (which also connects to the A278). Passing under the A278, Maidstone Road becomes rural, with a commuter car park, before passing over the M2 to the local authority boundary.
