The C9S starts on the A947 and heads east, crossing the hills to the scattered community of Fishrie. It then follows the north bank of the Burn of Fishrie to meet the A98 near Fishriegreen. There is a short section of the route which passes through the historic county of Banffshire, and this was formerly numbered as the C26L.
