National Highways Roads

Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council is the Highway Authority for all roads in Calderdale, with the exception of Trunk roads managed by National Highways.

It mostly lies within the West Riding of Yorkshire, although a large part of the west of the council area around Todmorden is in Lancashire.

It was formed in 1974, by the merger of the county borough of Halifax, the boroughs of Brighouse, Todmorden and the urban districts of Elland, Hebden Royd, Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge, and part of Queensbury and Shelf urban district.

Highways Management

The Council is responsible for the maintenance of over 1000 km of roads and associated footways in the Borough. This also includes, 700 miles of Public Rights of Way (footpaths), 125 miles of Bridleways, bridges, structures, signal controlled junctions, controlled crossings, road markings, traffic signs and 30,503 street lights.

Calderdale MBC has a contract agreement in place with AMEY to undertake all highway construction work and also uses Leeds City Council for Traffic Signal Design and Operations and the Leeds Sign Shop as key supplier of traffic sign faces.
