It was formed in 1974, by the merger of the county borough of Halifax, the boroughs of Brighouse, Todmorden and the urban districts of Elland, Hebden Royd, Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge, and part of Queensbury and Shelf urban district.
The Council is responsible for the maintenance of over 1000 km of roads and associated footways in the Borough. This also includes, 700 miles of Public Rights of Way (footpaths), 125 miles of Bridleways, bridges, structures, signal controlled junctions, controlled crossings, road markings, traffic signs and 30,503 street lights.
Calderdale MBC has a contract agreement in place with AMEY to undertake all highway construction work and also uses Leeds City Council for Traffic Signal Design and Operations and the Leeds Sign Shop as key supplier of traffic sign faces.
