Carlisle is a English city near the Solway Firth and the Scottish Border. Several important cross-country routes terminate here, including the A6, A7, A69, A595 and A689. Until the closing of the Cumberland Gap in December 2008, the M6 and A74 also ended here; the M6 is now the only road to continue through Carlisle instead of terminating there.
