Carluke

Carluke is a small town between the south eastern extremities of the Greater Glasgow urban area and the historic town of Lanark to the south, with Carluke now being the larger of the two towns. It sits high on the hillside above the steep Clyde Valley, and is largely a commuting town.

The town stands astride the A73, which passes through the western side of the town centre on Kirkton Street as it makes its was south from Newmains into Lanark. To the north, there is a multiplex with the A721, which branches off onto Glamis Avenue at a signalised T junction. This takes it around the north of the town centre on a relatively modern relief road, the original line having followed the High Street. The A721 then winds past the eastern suburbs on its way across the county towards Peebles. The B7056 cuts across the south eastern side of the town, crossing the A721 at a staggered crossroads at Roadmeetings, and the A73 at another dogleg at Braidwood. Modern housing is slowly growing out towards this road, and also out to the railway which forms the western boundary of the urban area.
