Castle Street is an important junction in Portchester, not just because it serves the historic castle, but because it is the exit to the railway station. The Railway Inn pub stood on the corner.
Many buildings to the north and to the west were demolished in the 1970s to create a large roundabout, serving the new dual carriageway bypass of the remains of the village centre.
