Thomas Telford was responsible for hundreds of bridges across the British Isles during his career. In order to achieve this level of output, for his Commission on Highland Roads and Bridges in Scotland, he designed a set of standard bridges which could be scaled to suit most sites, with only the longer, more difficult, or more important crossings being individually designed.
