Celbridge Interchange is junction 6 (originally junction 2A) of the M4. It opened in 2003, 12 years after the motorway, to cater for the large volumes of traffic to the nearby Intel and Hewlett-Packard plants. To facilitate construction over a live motorway single span 43m bridges were used for the intersection, while the original M4 bridges in the previous decade did have a pier in the relatively wide central reservation. A nearby overbridge in the original scheme was removed as part of the works.
