Chapel Ash Island is the westernmost major junction of the Wolverhampton Inner Ring Road, and is the primary access route from the west of the city, Shropshire and M54 via junctions 3 and 4.
It has provision for grade-separation for rotational traffic, which was planned to be carried on a flyover. The sunken area in the centre of the roundabout is used both as a pedestrian crossing, and a formal gardens. It is was the first light-controlled roundabout on A4150.
