Charlotte Place is a roundabout junction in Southampton City Centre, with buildings all around it, and even in the middle.
Until 1968 it was a series of terraced streets, still known as Charlotte Place. Belleview Street, Northam Street and Compton Walk ran west-to-east, while the main roads were still in the same place as today.
In 1968 the terraces were demolished and replaced with the present roundabout, with a car park in the middle, accessed by an underpass from what was left of Compton Walk. Pedestrians had to use subways and walk through the car park.
The changes happened at the same time as Dorset Street and St Andrew's Road were upgraded to dual carriageway, along with the upgrade at Six Dials. This soon allowed the A33 to be diverted onto this route, away from the city centre. Brunswick Place was later dualled, and became part of the A3024.
In the early 2000s, Onslow Road was given direct access to Dorset Street. This meant the A335 was taken away from this junction, and now terminated a few hundred yards further north on the A33. The old route via St Mary's Road was still usable, just not the main route. At the same time, the car park was filled in and a hotel was built in its place, and traffic lights were added on all approaches to the junction to allow pedestrians to cross.
