Chorleywood Interchange is junction 18 of the M25. It opened in 1976 as part of the A405 Rickmansworth Bypass.
The junction is squeezed into the space left it by 1930s plans for an arterial parkway orbital route for London, with the area north-west and east of the junction developed with residential properties before the road began construction.
As a result, the junction is much tighter than you might expect for a road of this age. The two clockwise sliproads run together along a single carriageway road, something generally only found on 1960s motorways.
The compact nature of the junction can cause delays on the A404. Since the M25 widening works, changes to the signal timings have improved the issue.
