City Junction is the name of junction 1 of the M50 motorway, positioned close to Dublin city centre. It opened in 2006 as part of the Dublin Port Tunnel, which is immediately to the north west.
The junction serves Terminals 1 and 2 of Dublin Port. It features a large flyover, but with traffic signals controlling the merge onto East Wall Road. Traffic leaving the Port is given the option of taking the motorways out of the city, or the R131 into the city.
Prior to the construction of the tunnel, the main exit from the Port was Tolka Quay Road. This moved on to Promenade Road so that right turns could be made via the new underpass. Bond Road was already in place to provide access to Eastpoint Business Park, and part of this road became one of the new slip roads, as well as the approach to the junction along East Wall Road.
As the Port Tunnel is tolled, traffic is given the choice of joining the M50 to use the tunnel, or using East Wall Road to go around it.
In the lead-up to January 2021, minor changes were required to 'Brexit proof' the interchange. This involved the placement of bollards to narrow the entrance to the port, making it easy to shut when at full capacity. A new holding pen and U-turn facility were built for vehicles without the correct paperwork. By the end of the year none of this had been necessary for its original purpose, but it had been used to manage traffic when the port was closed due to a protest.
This is a rare example of a motorway junction built entirely on land reclaimed from the sea. East Wall Road is the original shoreline, before the port expanded.
The City Junction name is rarely used in public, with the interchange simply being known as the entrance to the port. TII, who are responsible for the road, call it Dublin Port.
