Coldean Interchange is the eastern end of the unofficially named Brighton and Hove bypass. The A270 is the old route of the A27, hence why it is D2/D1 once it leaves the A27.
The junction has been around since 1994, however it originally did not have the flyover, that was constructed in 2010 and is wide enough for two lanes, but only room for 1 lane due to a pavement which is impossible to access.
