The tiny village of Colpy lies in the heart of rural Aberdeenshire roughly midway between Huntly and Inverurie. A small cluster of houses is surrounded by farms and houses dotted around the fields, many of them also home to businesses such as garages or light industrial units. For travellers on the A96, however, the village is perhaps best known for the junction with the A920, Oldmeldrum road.
The junction lies a little to the north of the main block of housing (which has been bypassed by a slight realignment of the A96, and is a simple T junction. The A96 has been slightly widened to provide room for a right turn lane in the centre, and there is also a left turn lane for southbound traffic. The junction can be quite busy, as it is a useful route from the A96 to the northern side of Aberdeen, avoiding having to fight through the city traffic, although with the construction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route this is likely to change in the coming years.
