There are not many large rivers on Islay, as it is a fairly flat island with lower rainfall than the mainland, but one of the largest is the River Laggan, which drains a large area to the east of Bowmore and flows out at the north end of Laggan Bay. There are in fact two bridges over the river here, the old stone arch bridge is hidden in undergrowth a little upstream of the modern replacement. The old bridge is now subjected to a 10T weight limit, and appears to be a single stone arch carrying a single carriageway road.
The new bridge is a single concrete span carrying a wide S2 roadway between pavements, although these have become very grassy over the years! The new bridge has also allowed the double bend over the old bridge to be bypassed, with a single sweeping bend now leading onto the long straight to the south.
