County Towns

County Towns are traditionally the seat of the county council, and associated services. Many counties have had more than one in the past, but since the local government reorganisation in 1974/5 in the UK they have ceased to carry the importance they once had. County Towns are not always the towns after which the county is named.
As county towns were administrative seats, often the County Towns had a denser network of A and B roads than other towns in the county. Furthermore, County Towns of large counties often had ambitious road schemes proposed in the 1960s (see Maidstone, for example).
