The Cowley Junction offers a rare bit of grade separation for the Oxford Ring Road.
The junction is built where Garsington Road used to meet the entrance to an industrial school. In the 1930s that area became surrounded by land related to the Cowley Motor Works. Space was left for the lane through the middle to become a dual carriageway.
In the 1950s that lane was dualled, but the Garsington Road junction was turned into a small roundabout, officially known as Garsington Road Roundabout. Very little demolition was required for this, including only one property on Garsington Road.
A flyover was eventually provided here, on a narrow alignment to minimise its land-take.
