The area around the junction was completely rural in 1946
In 1963, the main route, then the B679 followed a different path to today
Starting in 1968, the A648 passed through the junction site
The present roundabout was built by 1971

Crusader Island is a roundabout on the A453 heading out of Nottingham towards the M1 at the edge of the Clifton Estate. It is named after a pub just off the island called the Crusader.

This is a standard roundabout where entries are signal controlled.

The A453 is a single carriageway 4 lane road which passes through in a NE/SW direction between the A52 and M1. The other exits are for a small housing estate (and the Crusader pub) to the west, and to the east, the C4 Clifton Road heading off towards Gotham and East Leake.

When the A453 headed into Nottingham from Castle Donington via the current B6540 and A6005, the B679 headed out from West Bridgford to Kegworth, via Wilford, Clifton, Gotham etc.

Eventually a link road was built from the M1 to this junction which was initially unclassified but became A648 on completion; this then took the B679 number completely off the existing route which became A648 all the way from the M1 to the A60/A606.

In 1978, the A453 took over the A648 designation through this junction leading to the present situation.

The only subsequent change is that in the early 2010s, the A453 was upgraded from single carriageway to dual carriageway (as far as the Mill Hill roundabout) and then single 4-lane carriageway as far as Fabis Drive, meaning that the route now passing through is improved.
