David Craig Number

David Craig Numbers are those roads having a number that 'connects' the roads they start and end on. They are named after internet author David Craig, who suggested on his website about the A361 that three and four digit road numbers were created on this basis.

The assertion was incorrect, but there are a small number of such routes in the country:

List of David Craig Numbers

Many of the David Craig Numbers have come into existence through later planning, very few of these can be considered to be 'pure' examples that were created when the relevant numbers were first allocated.

  • A303 - connects the A30 to the M3.
  • A404 - terminates on the A40 at the Marylebone Flyover, meets the A40 again in High Wycombe and the A4 at Maidenhead, and terminates, under motorway regulations, the M4. Trunk section is between M40 at Handy Cross and M4 junction 8/9.
  • A768 - connects the A7 and A68.
  • A1214 - connects the A12 and A14. Despite this, the number is a coincidence, as the A14 was still A45 when the number was created.
  • A3604 - connects the A36 and A4 across Windsor Bridge in Bath. The extra '0' was inserted in the middle as the A364 already exists. This is perhaps the most contrived example.
  • A5505 - a new link road through Dunstable connects a new section of the A5 to the A505.
  • M621 - terminates on the M62 at junction 27 and the M1 at junction 43. This is quite possibly the only pure example that hasn't been brought about by later renumbering even though the route of the M1 changed (extending the M621 in the process).

Former David Craig Numbers

  • A411 - in the original 1922 numbering, the A411 connected the A41 at Bushey Heath with the A1 at Barnet. With the opening of the Barnet Bypass, the route of the A1 moved, with the A411 now terminating on the A1000.
