As with the Deanery Road Roundabout to the south, for many years Dramway was a bit of a dead-end, with the missing section across Siston Common being held up by protestors. This, as well as the close proximity of the village of Shortwood, may help explain why the junction was built offline, with the B4465 crossing the A4174 to the south, and the two routes simply connected by a spur. South to North movements on the Ring Road are provided with a slip lane that bypasses the roundabout, as are North to East on the B4465. The latter is probably to aid traffic headed for the industrial estates in Pucklechurch.
History
Stage 1
The A4174 section north of the roundabout was completed in June 1993 but it then remained closed due to delays caused by a change of plan for the Shortwood Link. A temporary western connection to B4465 was originally planned, but it was decided that this would cause traffic congestion in Shortwood and Cossham Street, Mangotsfield, hence the change to the eastwards link road.
The section from Lyde Green Roundabout (Westerleigh Road) to Dramway Roundabout and the link road to Shortwood Hill (Shortwood Bypass) was to be opened on 12 September 1994 by Madge Hudson, Chairwoman of Avon County Council, bringing the junction into service.
Stage 2
The 1.5 mile "missing link" section of the Bristol Avon Ring Road, southwards from Dramway Roundabout to A420 Deanery Road, Warmley, opened to traffic in September 2001 to complete the junction.
