Crossings related to the A896 | |||||
Drochaid a' Chadha carries the A896 over the Abhainn Cumhang a' Ghlinne as it climbs up towards the summit from Kishorn. The bridge is sited almost at right angles to the road on either bank, forcing a tight S-bend to cross the bridge. This has been eased somewhat in recent years, with work on either side of the bridge carried out between 2008 and 2010 to widen the approaches, although the road is still generally single track.
The bridge itself dates back to 1815 when Thomas Telford built the road through the glen from Lochcarron to Shieldaig as part of his commission on Highland Roads and Bridges. It is a typical single stone arch similar to hundreds of other bridges built by the commissioners, with battered abutments and parapets that curve down at the ends. However, this bridge has clearly been hit more than once, and the parapet on the downstream bridge has been rebuilt in concrete, at some point in the past, with a more recent repair in evidence as well.
