The Dunball Interchange, M5 junction 23, connects the A39 and A38 to the M5 a couple of miles north of Bridgwater. The junction is a simple 2 level roundabout on the A39, but with a dualled section leading off to the west to meet the A38. This section of the A39 is a spur, with the main route running into the town a couple of miles to the east. The creation of this spur, on what was already a reasonably busy unclassified road, led to the construction of a bypass for Puriton.
Immediately to the west of the main interchange, the A39 spur meets the A38 at another roundabout. This is an at-grade junction, with the A38 south of here dualled into Bridgwater itself. Much of the dual carriageway is now lined with industrial estates and new development.
