Dursey Island, on the Cork coast, is accessible by a cable car service from Ballaghboy. The cable car transports passengers and livestock across the narrow strait.
While this is not a ferry by the traditional definition, it is a vital transport link for islanders who previously would be cut off from the mainland for long periods of time, the waters not being suitable for year round ferry operation. Slipways on either side of the gap allow for transport boats to ship vehicles, building materials, and larger livestock across during calmer conditions.
