A20 London-Dover
This article is about the original E5, from London to Dover and on to Yayladagi, on the Turkish border with Syria.
For the current E05, from Greenock to Southampton and on to Algericas, Spain, see E05.

The E2 was a European route running from London to Dover via Folkestone, and onto Brindisi on the heel of Italy via Reims and Parma. It lasted from 1950 to 1983.

Route

The route changed lots in Eastern Europe. In 1950 it was London - Nis - Alexandropouli, gaining a Turkish section running Ispala - Beypazari - Yayladagi the next year. These were joined up in 1952, giving a route of London - Nis - Beypazari - Yayladagi. In 1958, the route between Nis and Yayladagi (at the border with Syria changed to run via Gerede. In 1966, two different routes ran between Nis and Silvri - the E5N running Nis - Sofia - Edirne - Silvri and the E5S running Nis - Alexandropouli - Silvri. It stayed that way until being replace by the new system in 1983.

UK Route

Beginning in Central London, the E2 headed south east to New Cross on the A2, before taking the A20 to Dover. When the A20(M) and M20 motorway upgrades of the route opened, it took them. This UK route is identical to the E2's.

Belgium - Aachen - Cologne - Frankfurt - Wurzburg - Nuremberg - Passau - Austria. This, save for Aachen - Cologne, is the A3

Austria - Level - Budapest - Szeged - Yugoslavia

Yugoslavian Route

Yugoslavia - Sofia - Silvenigrad - Turkey

  • Level - Budapest - Nis - Thessaloniki: E75 (Nis - Thessaloniki E5S)
  • Nis - Sofia - Silvri - Gerede: E80 (Nis - Silvri E5N)
  • Thessaloniki - Alexandropouli - Kesan: E90 (E5S)
  • Kesan - Silvri: E84 (E5S)
