The Eden Bridge crosses the River Eden just to the north east of Lazonby, carrying the B6413 on towards Kirkoswald.

The Bridge

There are four spans across the river, with the eastern of the middle pair being the largest - the other three are all more or less the same size. There are an additional two flood arches on the eastern side of the bridge as well. The whole structure is built of Red Sandstone and erected in 1762, although there have been a number of repairs carried out over the years. Whilst the bridge is single track (signs warn that it is only 10 feet wide), it has only been traffic-light controlled since 2013. Indeed, it was not until you reach the apex of the bridge over the larger arch that you can be certain there is nothing approaching!

The Approaches

On either side of the bridge, the B6413 follows the meandering riverbank, which means that this is not a straightforward up-and over bridge. When approaching from Lazonby, the road starts to climb between the parapets some distance before the bridge is reached, although the parapets are further apart for the approaches. There is then a sharp bend to the right to cross the bridge, followed by a sharp left turn to descend on the Kirkoswald side. This again is between parapets, although there is room for two cars to pass.
