The Elephant and Castle is a road junction in South London. For a long time, it was a large roundabout, however, in the mid 2010s it was converted into a series of signalised crossroads around the edge of the majority of the circulatory carriageway.
The junction was named after a coaching inn which was positioned in the middle of the road, with six roads converging around it. A series of subways were built in the 1940s.
By the 1960s, the large roundabout had been built. A large area was cleared to build this, including the coaching inn and the Trocadero Cinema.
