Ferrytoll Junction is junction 1B of the M90, situated between North Queensferry and Inverkeithing on the north bank of the Forth. Today it is a full access roundabout interchange between the motorway and the B981 which passes underneath. The south facing M90 slips also split to provide access to the A9000, a bus only route across the old Forth Road Bridge since the opening of the Queensferry Crossing in 2017. The Ferrytoll Park and Ride site for Edinburgh sits in the north east corner of the junction.
History
This junction has been completely rebuilt since it first opened in the 1960s as a result of the construction of the Queensferry Crossing. The junction first opened as the northern approach to the Forth Road Bridge in 1964 and as originally built, the junction sat further south, the current southern bridge under the motorway being roughly on the site of the original northern bridge. There were also only south facing slips, and the B980 met the roundabout in the north west corner. At this time, the mainline overhead was the A90, the M90 starting at the next junction to the north, Admiralty Junction. The B981 also departed in the south east corner, running parallel to the offslip, and so providing a more direct route into North Queensferry.
