Castle Bytham post office Once a thriving business employing over a dozen people in the bakehouse and shop, and with 4 delivery vans serving surrounding communities, the business had already been hit by the advent of the motor car when my Father bought it in 1970. By the time he retired in the early 80s supermarkets had arrived and it had become a business entirely staffed by the family. Roundsmen, the bakery, the corn and animal feed business, gent's clothing and hardware were but a memory. The successor owners did well to keep the petrol pump despite official hostility, and to keep the post office franchise. The business changed hands again subsequently, and is now trading without either of those facilities. I still wish the latest owners well for the future.
Update November 2014. The shop has recently closed.
