Description:Shannon Breeze One of the two car ferries which maintain the Shannon crossing is seen leaving Tarbert bound for Killimer, photographed from her sister vessel Shannon Dolphin. The present ferry has operated since 1969 and is a key link in the transport system of west Munster as it directly links the road networks of Clare and Kerry avoiding the detour of 85 miles (137 km) to cross the river by the lowest bridge at Limerick. In the background are the twin smokestacks of the large oil-fired power station at Tarbert which can supply 560 MW to the Irish grid to cope with peak demands and was established in the same year as the ferry.
