Five Barred Gate is a major junction between the A59, A677, and B6230. Previously this was the branching point for the Preston-Halifax trunk route from the Preston-Leeds trunk route but today both routes are merely primary albeit still busy. A large hotel and petrol station also adorned the junction.
The original junction was a simple fork between the A59 and A677 with the B6230 joining slightly further to the west. By 1963, the A59 from the Samlesbury Interchange to here was dualled by providing a new westbound carriageway leaving the original twisty single carriageway as the eastbound. The fork was signal controlled with a clear priority given to the A677 owing to the convoluted history of the routing of the A59 around Mellor Brook and the former Samlesbury aerodrome site (refer to the A6063 (Mellor Brook) page for this history).
In 2009, as part of the expansion of BAE Samlesbury to create a new enterprise zone, the existing fork junction was replaced with a signal controlled roundabout arrangement and new signals were introduced to allow traffic coming out from the B6230 to avoid the need for an uncontrolled right turn towards Blackburn. Not long after, the old Esso petrol station adjacent to the junction was redeveloped to become a miniature service area operated by EG Group.
