The rather unimaginatively named Fochabers East Roundabout is located at the eastern end of the Fochabers bypass, which opened in February 2012. It was built on the line of the A98, with the A96 on a new alignment to either side. The A96 now bypasses Fochabers to the north, and runs parallel to the old line along the High Street to meet this roundabout. It then turns south and cuts across the fields to the east of the town to resume its original line eastwards. The A98 has therefore been ever so slightly curtailed, and now starts at the roundabout instead of in the town itself.
The old line of the A96 - A98 through Fochabers is now an extension of the B9014, which previously terminated at the western end of the town. The last section of the former A96 route is now unclassified, providing access to properties and a holiday park, although a cycle track does extend along the old road line to the A96.
Previous junction
The roundabout replaced the original junction of the A96 and A98 which was located approximately 300m to the west. This was originally a "TOTSO" T-junction with the A96 giving way to the A98 although this was later changed to a mini roundabout. The section of the A98 between the old and new roundabouts, along with the previous route of the A96 through Fochabers, became part of the B9104 on opening of the bypass.
