Folkestone is a coastal and harbour town and seaside resort in South East Kent. Historically, it has served cross-channel ferries to France before the opening of the Channel Tunnel.
Historically, coach traffic reached Folkestone via Aldington, Lympne, and Hythe. While the A20 from Ashford to Folkestone is called "Hythe Road", it has always diverted at Westenhanger and reached Folkestone via Cheriton, avoiding Hythe.
Folkestone is bypassed by the A20 Roundhill Tunnel, which opened in 1993 in preparation for Channel Tunnel traffic. Prior to this, traffic on the M20 headed through the northern suburbs of Folkestone and up Dover Hill. The other main roads reaching the town are the A259 towards Hythe and Hastings, and the A260 towards Hawkinge and Canterbury (the latter via the A2).
The main junction for Folkestone is the Castle Hill Interchange, where the M20 and A259 both end.
