This Iron Bridge is a major landmark on the northern england landscape, and is recognised across the world. Unfortunately for locals, the bridge tends to signify traffic congestion!!

Northumbria - Map 15 from The Dunlop Book (1920)

No road numbers - this must be one of last last road maps produced before the classification of 1922/23. Some points of interest: 1. it's not very clear which is the Great North Road e.g. the road between Scotch Corner and Darlington is shown as a secondary route, whilst the road from Boroughbridge to Darlington via Northallerton, including the part later lost in the construction of RAF Dishforth, is a main route; 2. the A68 is just a minor road; 3. the A696, A697 & A1 all appear to be of equal status.

Durham Road heading into Gateshead town... (C) Trevor Littlewood
This road was once designated as the A1, the main road connecting London to Edinburgh; it passed through Gateshead town centre, crossed The Tyne Bridge and on through Newcastle city centre. The A1 on Tyneside has been re-routed around the western side of both Newcastle and Gateshead and this road is now designated as the A167.
Gateshead's war memorial is seen at the left side of the image.

East Side of the Southern End of The High Street
The wide High Street provides ample space for free short-term parking (controlled by free discs available in most shops). Good to see some family businesses still going. In the late 1950s my brother and I saved up our pocket money to buy a valve* from Maxwell's to repair our radiogram. A start to a career in electronics! (*tube to our U.S. cousins.)

Darlington Inner Ring Road Complete.png
The complete Darlington Inner Ring Road as planned in the early 1970's. The western side would have been the final stage which was never built. This map shows the remainder of the road as originally built with road numbers applicable to the time. The three roundabouts on the eastern side have been altered in the intervening years with Parkgate Roundabout becoming a set of traffic lights in 2014.
