This photo was taken on the Sussex Road Trip in December 2005, and shows a beautiful finger post from the village of Newick on the A272. probably the only sign which shows both Winchester and Canterbury on the same post.

England's Route 66The A272

About 2 miles west of Petworth I was out on one of my usual Sunday jaunts in the countryside, this is the A272 which is a must drive road, a fabulous ride from Winchester, Hants to just north of Heathfield E Sussex. This is 1/2 mi east of Half Way Bridge.

Flooding at New Bridge - Geograph - 1667975.jpg
Flooding at New Bridge
The melting of the heavy snowfall and a lot of rain caused the Arun (River and Canal here) to burst its banks. This is quite a frequent occurrence at this bridge, see <a title='http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/953753' rel='nofollow' href='http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/953753'>Link</a><img style='padding-left:2px;' alt='External link' title='External link - shift click to open in new window' src='http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png' width='10' height='10'/>. Much of the picture is in the grid square to the north.

The West Meon Hut The pub's web site asserts that the building "dates back almost 300 years". One thing's for certain, the traffic lights at this busy A32/A272 junction would not have existed then.

Butlers Green Road, Haywards Heath Until last autumn this was the A272 but has now been redesigned the B2272 after the opening of the Haywards Heath relief road. To the immediate right is the junction with the old route of Isaac's Lane, former the A273, whilst developments are in the process of being built either side of the road. Beyond the hedge to the left will be Lucastes, see 4349966, whilst beyond the green fence to the right is 4408832. The cottages just in view beyond are 4408840.
