A3024 Bursledon Road

A new set of traffic lights has been installed at the junction with Orpen Road. At the same time the old footbridge has been removed. The council have taken a backward step here, as the traffic lights don't have meshed lenses that stop the lenses from reflecting sunlight.

Looking inbound from the West End Road overbridge one can see the two Truvelos enforcing the ridiculous 30mph speed limit on the least developed stretch of the A3024 within the city.

Looking inbound at this large interchange. This interchange was built sometime in the 1980s and required a lot of compulsory purchase.

Looking inbound towards Northam Bridge. Watch out, there is a new Truvelo just after the traffic lights, and the speed limit is 30mph.

A bit further on. GSJ just visible in the distance. Speed cameras - limit is 30 despite no accesses and GSJ!

Bitterne Bypass 6.jpg
Looking on to the A334 junction, where there is a lane drop. The A334 lane is free flowing, but the two A3024 lanes stop at traffic lights.
Bitterne Bypass 7.jpg
Looking on down the A3024. The bypass ends at the far set of lights, and with it the dual carriageway.
Bitterne from A334.jpg
Approaching from the A334, you can see that this is the line of the original high street. A pedestrian underpass allows it to be accessed now.
Red Lion in Bitterne.jpg
The Red Lion pub stands at the junction between what used to be the A344 to Botley - now pedestrianised - and what used to be the A3024 to Bursledon - now a quiet dead end.

The Lion statue in front of the pub has no connection to the Red Lion. It used to be on top of shops in Lion Place, about 150 yards behind the pub that in the 1840s to 1920s was the shopping heart of the village.

For views of how the pub used to look, see: http://bitterne.net/gallery/The_Lion.html.

Dangerous piece of road - Coppermine - 3397.JPG
Dangerous piece of road

The pavement in this photo quite cleverly suddenly moves out into the road just over the brow of a hill. This happens inbound on the A3024 Bursledon Road in Southampton just after the new set of traffic lights at Orpen Road. I have written to the council with my concerns about vehicles and bicycles mounting the pavement but nothing has been done. Must we wait for a pedestrian to be run over?

A3024 Bitterne Road West

Typical character of this road. Drivers heading outbound are reminded that it is 30mph by a big yellow sign at this point, although the bushes have obscured much of the sign!

Looking uphill towards the start of the Bitterne bypass, aka Maybray King Way, which veers round to the left. The old road continued straight up the hill and through the centre of Bitterne.

Ten out of the eleven speed cameras in Southampton go round in pairs. This pair is located on the least developed part of the A3024 and enforces a 30mph limit.

Viewed from the eastbound onslip from West End Road. This bypass was built in the early 1980s to bypass the centre of Bitterne in Southampton. It has a 30mph speed limit.
