Alignment of the old Portsmouth Road on... (C) Stefan Czapski
Looking north-east from the T-junction formed by Telegraph Road and present day Portsmouth Road. The avenue of trees marks what was once - within living memory - the continuation of Portsmouth Road toward Putney Hill.

Before the building of the Alton estates and the upgrading of the A3 in the 1950's and '60's, Portsmouth Road left the A3 (London-bound) at about TQ 2216 7283 and ran through - pretty directly - to join Putney Hill near the 'Green Man' (at about TQ 2364 7418). It crossed Roehampton Lane near Scio Pond and continued across Putney Heath.

What remains of the old Portsmouth Road has been renamed Norstead Place at its SW end, while a fair stretch of it at the NE end has been renamed Wildcroft Road (sharing the identity of what was previously a very minor road).
