Ilchester, Nov 18 2008

A car transporter shed its load of brand new cars on the w/bnd A303 at about 7am. By 10, I was there in Ilchester for the diversion. This is the former A37/A303 junction, now mainline from old A303 to old A37 on the right.

Looking east, where the 2 roads separated. The old A37 went up the dead end road, Fosse Way, now cut off by the bypass near Podimore. The B3151, which takes all 3 arms now, heads around the bend to Street.

A handy footbridge shows the dead end to the left and, continuation to the right. Looking south, the old A37 went into Ilchester at the rbt.

Layout of Three Lamps Interchange as planned between 1970 and 1972. This was the most ambitious design for the junction.

Old A37 from the northern end looking towards Ilchester. This was a Roman road but theres none left as they all went home. Cars came this way until around 1976 when the A303 Podimore bypass opened..

The A35 Dorchester Bypass Approaching Monkey's Jump Roundabout

The historic meeting point of the A30 and A37 (well, one of them, they multiplexed here). The current multiplex between the two roads ends at the other historic point.
