The old Holyhead road at Newbridge, Wolverhampton. Prior to 1823 this was the crossing point of the Staffs & Worcs Canal and the Smestow Brook and marked the start of the long and steep climb over the sandstone ridge to Tettenhall. This was on the important coach route between London and Holyhead.

Apologies for using MS Paint! I reckon the main traffic flow here is Birmingham-Oxford, so here's how adding a couple of slip roads could ease the pain. Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 14, 2005 by rusty

A41/A4098 junction, Moxley. Sandwell Council invested in some really cr*p signmaking equipment in the 1970s and there are still plenty of these barely legible signs around, including a good set in Great Bridge itself.

Faded sign at A56-A41 junction

This '80s sign has become distinctly stripey over the years. 'Upton' refers to the suburb a mile down the road, and is given the prominence it is due. The left turn may once have listed Conwy and Wrexham, now usually reached from the A55 behind me.

A 1996 view of the fresh looking bypass looking towards Aylesbury. I'm surprised Philips MA lanterns were used considering SON was already becoming dominant at the time.

Not where you think-the other bad junctions all have odd signs but this is the only westbound 'floppy'

Misty morning, A41, Kings Langley
Taken from the last lay-by on the A41 going southeast before reaching the M25 roundabout (Junction 20) - the triangular warning sign for this roundabout can be clearly seen in the central reservation. The bridge ahead carries the very minor no-through-road called Langley Lodge Lane.

The modern dualled A41 now takes traffic over the high ground to the west of Kings Langley village and the old road along the Gade Valley.
