A458 Stewponey - Coppermine - 10450.jpg
A458 Stewponey

This is a 1994 view of the recently resurfaced A458 between the A449 and Stourbridge. The centre of the picture is a pole mounted light with what appears to be a Revo Prefect lantern. To the left are some other older lights which were in the progress of being replaced when this picture was taken. In the distance is a hockey stick column with a SOX lantern which was relatively new but all the non SON lights were removed shortly afterwards including the pole mounted bracket.

A458 Mucklow Hill lighting replacement - Coppermine - 17223.jpg
A458 Mucklow Hill lighting replacement

This is the top of Mucklow Hill and most of the original columns containing SOX are still in situ. The original SOX lanterns were slim bowl Z9554's but most have been replaced by MA's. On the left hand side is a post top Vectra which is a casual replacement for the SOX. All these columns are now being replaced by a totally new installation of post top Arcs. It's not only the lighting that's changing - the speed limit here used to be 40mph and the carriageway heading up the hill was two lanes. A year or so ago the speed limit was cut to 30 and the 40mph limit now starts in the distance. The speed limit reduction is bad enough but the worst thing is the lane drop before the summit of the hill. This is really annoying if you're stuck behind something slow.

Here's another view showing the new Arcs going up. This used to be S4 and 40mph and the uphill carriageway could do with having the two lanes reinstating because of the frustration caused by slow vehicles struggling up the hill.

Quinton, Birmingham. It was unusual to see these columns with casual Unistreet (LED) replacements. The old blue columns on the left are Sandwell council, and the modern black columns on the right are Birmingham council.

Stourbridge ring-road. 10 metre columns that date back to the late 1960s. This column has a WRTL Arc lantern, a casual replacement. The blue coloured column in the background has a Holophane Estilo lantern. The original lanterns would of all been LPS/SOX.

8629 JPG Urbis Ampera Maxis M5 Motorway.jpg
Urbis Ampera Maxi lanterns now light the M5 in the West Midlands and north of Worcestershire. They were only installed earlier this year, and these particular ones seen here replaced Urbis ZX3s that had been there since the early 2000s. The other older lanterns getting replaced are Philips Iridiums, along the sections in Worcestershire, and they were only installed in 2012 and 2009. This picture was taken from the A458, along the bridge just going straight over the motorway.
8642 JPG Concrete Column Arc 80 Lye.jpg
Concrete column with its original outreach bracket, but with a more modern WRTL Arc 80 lantern, which is a casual replacement. You can also just about see a sleeved post-top WRTL Vectra lantern in the background as well. Unfortunately these will probably soon be replaced with new LED lanterns, and the old concrete columns could possibly get replaced as well. This picture was taken in Lye, along Chapel Street, just off the A458.
IMG8648JPG New Urbis Ampera Maxis Stourbridge.jpg
Brand new 12m post-top columns with Urbis Ampera Maxi (LED) lanterns along Stourbridge central ring-road. The previous and original street lights were 10m columns with brackets and GEC Z9554 (SOX/LPS) lanterns, but before that I believe the original lanterns may have been Revo Hyperions which are also SOX/LPS, installed in the late 1960s when the road first opened.
