Thought I'd have a go at my first POTM entry here.
Taken in February 2008, this was taken at the A49 / A577 junction in Wigan. I thought I'd go for the contrast of varying features here, particularly with the old signposts and traffic lights.

After the turns for Robin Park Road, Asda and Frith Street/Stadium Way is this split - mainly for traffic coming from Asda, B&Q or the JJB Stadium to turn round towards Ashton and St. Helens.

As we leave Saddle Junction, the road tightly turns and squeezes underneath another railway bridge.

The A49 splits in two here while the two roads are separated by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The road on the southern bank is Pottery Road, while the northern bank continues with Wallgate.

Wallgate carries on into the town centre, and regains the road in the other direction after Wigan Pier.

Near St. Paul's Avenue and St. Paul's Church, you can see this dual carriageway has no central barrier. Something this road shares in common with the A329(M).

After the traffic lights, the dual carriageway ends.
The houses to the right will be demolished to make way for the controversial A5225 expressway in the next few years or so. There will be a diamond junction here.

Approaching the M6 J25 spur roundabout, and there's the new statue welcoming visitors to the town.

The roundabout with the spur from M6 J25. The statue is called 'Spirit of Wigan', designed by local artist Clare Bigger. It 'depicts a central archway with three figures representing the strength and optimism of the borough'.

Coming from Haydock Island, we're approaching the turn off for Haydock. Also signposted are Haydock Park racecourse and nearby hotels (presumably for anyone staying for the races!)
