This '80s sign has become distinctly stripey over the years. 'Upton' refers to the suburb a mile down the road, and is given the prominence it is due. The left turn may once have listed Conwy and Wrexham, now usually reached from the A55 behind me.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jul 19, 2009 by kieronDads used to tell their kids (and probably still do) that this is the only roundabout in the country where you drive around it the wrong way, i.e turn right on to it. Not true of course, it isn't a roundabout, but it is a weird junction for the unwary. Traffic on the far left of the picture is coming from the south (Manchester) and heading West towards Bolton (or North to Ramsbottom). To go East to Rochdale, drivers from the South turn right keeping the island on their left.

Near the A56 in Haslingden. Now removed.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Feb 22, 2007 by Bryn666Taken from 1982 Collins Atlas of Britain. The M65 is barely 3 miles long, but it's next 3 short extensions are plotted. The A56 diversion to j8 is shown as under construction but in the meantime the A56 follows its traditional course thrown Rawtenstall and Burnley, trunked as far as the A646 junction. The A6068 and A56 Colne-Skipton both shown as non-primary. Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Feb 18, 2007 by BobSykes

Taken from 1982 Collins Atlas of Britain. Shows the planned extension of the M65 from Burnley to Blackburn, the planned Whitebirk diversion of the A6119, and the planned A56 diversion over the tops from the end of the then A622 (not numbered on the map) Haslingden bypass to j8 of the M65. Also see the planned A59 Penwortham bypass of Preston - 50 years since first planned, it has still never materialised, although the top section did get built. Note the old route of the A582, and the A677 Haslingden to Blackburn. Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Feb 18, 2007 by BobSykes

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 09, 2007 by snowdonThe line of the Roman road inside the roundabout at the junction of the A556, A56 and M56 sliproad.
These signs and road markings make it very clear which lane traffic on the A56 dual carriageway should use on approach to the roundabout.
There's also a blue bordered sign for Mickle Trafford, although it sadly does not suggest which lane to use.
