Excellent example of a pre Warboys sign.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983Here's a better pic of the infamous staggered crossroads with the A58.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 26, 2005 by antster1983Dads used to tell their kids (and probably still do) that this is the only roundabout in the country where you drive around it the wrong way, i.e turn right on to it. Not true of course, it isn't a roundabout, but it is a weird junction for the unwary. Traffic on the far left of the picture is coming from the south (Manchester) and heading West towards Bolton (or North to Ramsbottom). To go East to Rochdale, drivers from the South turn right keeping the island on their left.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 04, 2008 by SteveA30Milepost at Ripponden in West Yorkshire at junction of A58 / A672 / B6113. The place names were chiseled off during the war to confuse the Germans, then kept that way to confuse Lancastrians.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 15, 2008 by SchultOn the left you can see a track heading off over the moor. This is the Roman / Pack Horse route joining, briefly, the A58.
This was a busy road during the Civil War. From Link4Life; a 'strong guard kepte by the Lancashire forces at a passage into both counties at a place called Blakston Edge,'
Defending against the advancing army under Earl of Newcastle in July 1642 were 800 men with a further 1200 garrisoned in Rochdale and 'two pieces of ordnance'.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 05, 2008 by SchultFirst mapped by John Ogilby (who created the country's 1st road atlas) in 1675, the track on the right is the pack horse route across the Pennines from Lydgate. Follows route of the Roman Road which went from Manchester (Mamuciam) to Ilkley (Verbeia). The gradient is almost 1 in 4.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 24, 2005 by Bryn666A58 Crompton Way, Bolton. Still S4.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 24, 2005 by Bryn666This - Beaumont Road in Bolton (A58) - was originally S4, and each junction was uncontrolled. Now it's D2, with lane drops at junctions, and signals for every junction.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 24, 2005 by Bryn666A58 Moss Bank Way, Bolton. It's D2 here, but the next bit isn't as lucky.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983Heading into St. Helens borough to the west. A much bigger sign that Wigan's to boast of as well.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983Coming into Wigan borough into the Ashton-in-Makerfield township heading east from M6 J24.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983And on the corner of Satinwood Close, we can see how much the sign has been turned!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983Quite old signage here - it should now be on a white background as the A58 through Ashton is no longer a major primary route. It's also bent a little...
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983Passing by some posh houses and relatively modern housing estates, Liverpool Road is quite wide here.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 19, 2005 by antster1983Past the posh houses, the road narrows in a bit.
