Gallery:A580
Whoever took this photo was ether standing very near or ON the M6 hard shoulder!! and stood there for a while judging from the long exposure. Facing in a generally northern direction, with the Northbound exit slip in the foreground. The interesting feature, apart from the lamp posts looking more like steal not concrete, (this photo was taken aprox late 60's early 70's), is the 70 speed limit signs on the EXIT from the motorway? NOTE: Photo from Steven Dowd at newton-le-willows.org

The M6 is still unlit, and has no reservation crash barrier.

Sorry, I forgot to mention Haydock Island is a hamburger roundabout. The A580 East Lancs Road ploughs through the roundabout under the M6. And once you're on that section, there's no turning back onto the roundabout!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 26, 2005 by antster1983Almost completed the circumnavigation of Haydock Island. Traffic from M6 southbound joins in soon.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jan 31, 2007 by MikeyaThe M62 is almost complete. Turns out the A580 was meant to go through to Hull, until WW2 intervened.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 26, 2005 by antster1983There has been a pub called the Greyhound at the roundabout ahead for at least 50 years and quite possibly since the A580 opened in 1934. In pre-motorway days, this was an important junction for traffic in the other direction (from Manchester). Ahead for Liverpool and the exotic holiday locations of Formby, Ainsdale and Southport. Left for the chemical centres of Warrington and Widnes, or the heady foreign delights of the North Wales coast. As can be seen by the queue in the left-hand lane, there is still plenty of traffic around.
