An important crossing of the River Wharfe, once carrying the main Leeds to York road. The bridge is early 18th century and is reputedly built of stone taken from the old castle.

The layby betrays the former route of the A660 eastbound towards Otley running alongside the river Wharfe. The road originally continued straight ahead for a short distance and then made a sharp rightward turn, but the alignment was eased many years ago.
